Hase Yuka()
Embroiderer (2004- )
Born in 1979 in Nibutani, Biratori, Saru District, Hokkaido. From an early age, she grew up watching her father, woodcarver Ozaki Tsuyoshi, at work. Drawn to traditional women’s handcrafts, she learned embroidery, knitting, and other Ainu crafts under the guidance of her mother, Nibutani craftswoman and embroiderer Ozaki Naoko, as well as embroidery artist Sekine Maki. In recent years, alongside her traditional work, she has also created everyday items under the theme “simple and accessible,” with the hope of making Ainu culture a familiar part of daily life.
Her main works include traditional garments such as cikarkarape and kapar-amip, as well as embroidered tapestries. While her designs reflect the patterns of the Saru River region, she allows her own sensibilities to guide her choice of shapes, motifs, and colors to create what she finds most beautiful. For works that appear to depart from tradition—such as “RATA,” developed for the Nibutani Ainu Craft product line in 2021—she expresses them within the boundaries she has set for herself, balancing what she feels must be preserved with what can be adapted. She places great importance on passing down the craft techniques she has learned from many artisans in Nibutani.
In 2022, she designed the wrapping for the Setapukusa-go, a sightseeing bus operated by Sapporo Kanko Bus.
