Shibata Yukihiro()

Attus Weaver (2021- )

Born in 1989 in Otofuke Town, Kato District, Hokkaido. She learned about attus weaving from books she saw as a child and was fascinated by the idea of "textiles made from tree bark," maintaining a deep interest ever since. At age 27, while working as a cook in Shiga Prefecture, she decided to travel around Japan by bicycle. During her journey, she visited Nibutani. Although the conditions were not yet right to start seriously at that time, after returning to Shiga, she was encouraged by the owner of her regular cake shop who said, "If you have something you want to do, go do it." Supported by this, she applied for the regional revitalization cooperation program at age 29 and served for three years. Her attus weaving skills were taught by local senior artisans during that time, and she continues to seek guidance from them on occasion.

Her main works include attus woven fabrics and knitting techniques inspired by the traditional emsiat, a type of traditional sword strap. Her attus weaving is characterized by a uniquely strong and robust style. When weaving, she tightens the fabric firmly and uses thicker weft threads to create durable and wear-resistant textiles. Currently, she collaborates with tailors to transform these fabrics into jackets and neckties, and combines them with deer leather to produce card cases, thereby creating new appeal through processing. Additionally, she produces guitar and camera straps applying emsiat techniques.

Member of the Nibutani Folk Craft Cooperative.
Participated in the collaborative product development project of "Nibutani Ainu Craft" in 2020 and 2021.
