Nishiyama Ryo

Woodcarver (2022- )

Born in 1996 in Furenai, Biratori Town, Hokkaido. Until the age of 22, he worked in fields different from Ainu crafts, but after being invited by seniors from the Biratori Ainu Association Youth Division and others, he joined the newly established Biratori Town Ainu Culture Promotion Public Corporation in April 2020.

Since 2021, he has been engaged in Ainu cultural transmission activities as a staff member of the Biratori Regional Iwor Revitalization Project at the same corporation. During summer, he has worked on maintaining traditional grain cultivation sites such as millet, barnyard millet, and foxtail millet, as well as participating in building traditional houses called cise. From December to March in winter, he learned craft techniques from local artisans. Since he originally liked making things, this experience inspired him to start creating woodcarving works.

He has also been active as an artist, participating in craft contests at the invitation of his colleague Hiramura Daiki, exhibiting at the "Ainu Art Show" held at Upopoy (National Ainu Museum and Park), and selling his own ita (※1) together with Kaizawa Toru and others at the BEAMS JAPAN event "Ainu Crafts."

He is mainly devoted to making ita. While referring to the traditional patterns depicted in works by predecessors from Nibutani, he strives to express his own style. He notes that unlike welding, which he practiced in his previous job and where mistakes can be redone, woodcarving is a one-shot process. He intends to continue creating traditional works in the future.

In 2023, he was responsible for the wrapping design of "Setapukusa-go", the sightseeing bus, and also participated in the collaborative product development project with "Nibutani Ainu Craft" (2023, 2024, 2025). A member of the Nibutani Craft Association.

※1 Ita Ita are traditional wooden trays carved with Ainu patterns, representing part of the inherited Ainu culture. Nibutani Ita, the style particular to the Saru River basin where Nibutani, Biratori stands, is an officially designated Traditional Craft Product. Nibutani Ita is a special brand that can only be called as such when made by specific craftspeople in Nibutani.
